How to Detect Hidden Water Leaks in Your Morwell Home

Hidden leaks waste water and cause structural damage long before you see a puddle. Here's how to spot the signs and what to do if you suspect a leak in your Morwell home.

Not all leaks are obvious. A dripping tap is easy to spot, but a slow leak inside a wall, under a floor or underground can go unnoticed for months — wasting thousands of litres of water and causing serious structural damage before you even know it's there. Here's how to detect hidden water leaks in your Morwell home, and what to do if you find one.

1. Check Your Water Meter

This is the simplest and most reliable test for a hidden leak. Turn off all taps, appliances and water-using fixtures in your home — including the dishwasher, washing machine and evaporative cooler. Then check your water meter. If the dial is still moving, or the numbers are changing, you have a leak somewhere between the meter and your house. Note the reading, wait 30 minutes without using any water, then check again — any change confirms a leak.

2. Watch Your Water Bill

If your water bill is creeping up but your water use habits haven't changed, a hidden leak is the most likely culprit. Compare your current bill to the same period last year — a significant unexplained increase is a red flag. Even a small, slow leak can waste hundreds of litres a day, which adds up quickly on your quarterly bill.

3. Look for Damp, Mould or Musty Smells

Hidden leaks inside walls or under floors often show up as damp patches, peeling paint, bulging plasterboard, or a persistent musty smell. Check behind and under fixtures, in cupboards under sinks, and around hot water systems. Mould appearing where it hasn't before — especially in corners, along skirting boards or on ceilings below bathrooms — can all point to a slow leak.

4. Listen for Running Water

When everything is turned off, can you hear water running? A hissing or trickling sound behind a wall, under a floor or near your hot water system can indicate a hidden leak. The quietest time to check is late at night when background noise is minimal. If you can hear water but can't account for it, it's worth investigating.

5. Check Your Hot Water System

A hot water system that's leaking is a common source of hidden water loss. Check the base of the unit and the overflow pipe for dripping or pooling water. A leaking pressure relief valve can waste a surprising amount of hot water — which means you're paying to heat water that's running straight down the drain. If your hot water system is over 8 years old and leaking, it's likely time for a replacement.

6. Inspect Your Yard

Underground leaks often show up in the garden. Look for unusually green or lush patches of grass, damp or spongy ground, or water pooling where it shouldn't. A leaking water main between the meter and your house can waste enormous amounts of water and undermine driveways or paths. If you notice any of these signs, call a plumber — underground leaks don't fix themselves.

What to Do If You Suspect a Leak
